Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti Gharib Nawaz and The Magician Jaypal Story | Abdullah Bayabani Stroy

After witnessing the divine powers of Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA), Jaypal the magician said:
“O saint, show us one of your greatest miracles.”

Hazrat replied calmly:
“First, you must show us the extent of your power. Then, we shall demonstrate ours.”

Jaypal accepted the challenge. To display his skill, he threw the hide of a deer into the air. By his magic, the hide transformed into a flying object. Jaypal leapt onto it, and at once it began to soar higher and higher into the sky. His followers rejoiced, clapping with pride as they watched their master rising into the clouds until he vanished from sight.

At that moment, Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA) commanded his blessed sandals (Na‘lain Mubarak):
“Fly into the sky, strike Jaypal upon his head, and bring him down.”

At once, the sandals lifted into the air and soared upwards. Soon, people below could see Jaypal being beaten mercilessly on the head by the saint’s sandals. Helpless and humiliated, he tumbled down from the sky and landed back upon the earth.

Overwhelmed and defeated, Jaypal placed his head at the feet of Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz (RA) and begged for mercy. The saint, with his boundless compassion, granted him safety and pardon.

Magician Jaypal requested a Miracle from Khwaja Gharib Nawaz

The miraculous powers of Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin also made Jaypal an admirer. Jaypal requested:
“Hazrat, I wish that you show me one of your spiritual miracles.”

Hazrat Khwaja entered into deep meditation. During this state, the sacred soul of Hazrat Khwaja ascended towards the higher realms and took along the soul of Jaypal as well. When both souls began to rise, Jaypal’s soul was stopped at the first heaven. At that moment, Jaypal’s soul sought help from Hazrat’s soul. Out of grace, Hazrat Khwaja Gharib Nawaz soul took Jaypal’s soul along with him. When they reached beneath the Divine Throne (‘Arsh), the veils were lifted from Jaypal’s eyes. He witnessed that the angels bowed with respect before the soul of Hazrat Khwaja and offered him great reverence.

Seeing this majesty, Jaypal’s soul embraced Islam right there. He then requested Hazrat to pray that he may live until the Doomsday. Hazrat prayed in the Divine Court, and his prayer was accepted. A command came from Allah the Almighty that Jaypal would remain alive until the Day of Resurrection.

After Hazrat returned from the state of meditation, Jaypal immediately placed all his Head at Hazrat’s feet and recited the Islamic testimony of faith (Kalima) three times. As soon as he did so, the courage of the Raja and the opponents of Hazrat collapsed, and they returned defeated.

Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin named Jaypal as Abdullah. Even today he is remembered in Ajmer by the name Abdullah Bayabani. It is said that he remains hidden from the eyes of people, yet he is still alive—guiding travelers on their way and helping those in distress.

Raja Prithvi Raj Chauhan against Khwaja Gharib Nawaz

Although Raja Prithvi Raj Chauhan was defeated step by step in his encounters with Hazrat Khwaja, he nevertheless remained persistent in his opposition. Time and again, he created new troubles and tried to cause harm to Hazrat. Despite receiving repeated warnings and words of advice, he refused to listen.

Once again Hazrat told him:
“It would be better for you to abandon your mischief.”

But Prithvi Raj continued his hostility. Finally, one day, Hazrat, in a state of spiritual majesty, declared:
“We have brought an end to your kingdom, and through the army of Islam you shall be slain.”

And indeed, within a few days, Sultan Muhammad Ghori marched upon Ajmer. After capturing the city, he arrested and executed Prithvi Raj.

After the death of Prithvi Raj, Jaypal (who had become Abdullah) and Shadi Dev brought Hazrat into the city of Ajmer. From there, Hazrat began his stay and initiated the blessed mission of spiritual guidance and propagation of Islam—a mission whose radiance continues to shine across every corner of the subcontinent to this very day.

After arriving in Ajmer Sharif, Hazrat built for himself a place of worship and a kitchen to feed the needy. The very site of that kitchen is today the location of his blessed shrine.
